Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is defined as the passage of gastric contents into the esophagus. It affects the quality of life and can présent complications in the short and long terni, these complications can be grouped into esophageal and extra-esophageal complications. In these last we find the oral manifestations. Other authors such as Bargen and Austin [1] have reported for the first time the relationship between dental erosions and gastrointestinal disorders. However, there are still doubts about the direct influence of gastric acids on the manifestation of other oral changes such as cavities, changes in salivary flow, erythema of the mucous membranes and dental hypersensitivity. Material and methods: The objective of this study was to identify and determine the prevalence of oral manifestations in adult patients aged I 8 to 50 with GERD; therefore, 62 GERD patients and 62 healthy Controls (control group) matched by sex and age were studied. They were identified, a GERD- related questionnaire was established, medical history and oral symptoms then a thorough examination of the oral mucosa, dental tissue, medical history and oral symptoms were collected. The primary outcome was defined as a statistically significant difference between the study group and the Controls in the presence of indicators: soft palate / hard and erythema of the uvula, tooth wear, xerostomia, acid / burn sensation per lane oral, subjective halitosis and dental sensitivity. The statistical analysis included a chi-square test and a raw odds ratio with 95% CI. Results: We included 62 GERD cases (23 men and 39 women) and 62 Controls (22 men and 40 women). The average age of the patients was 32.4 ± 9.8). Regarding the frequency of brushing, approximately 59.7% of the GERD population versus 64.7% of the Controls reported brushing their teeth twice a day (P = 0.548). 33 GERD patients versus 31 Controls, 53.2% versus 50%, brushed their teeth at the appropriate time, that is, in the morning after the meal and in the evening before bedtime (P = 0.719). More than iialf of the patients, 72.6% GERD versus 82.3% in the Controls, used an inappropriate brushing technique, but this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.198). The difference between the consultations in the two groups. was not statistically significant (p = 0.421). Regarding oral diseases, we observed that xerostomia, mucous membrane burn, the prevalence of dental erosions, dental hypersensitivity, tooth decay, subjective halitosis, erythema of the hard palate, soft palate and / or uvula, bas a higher prevalence in patients with GERD with a significant difference P < 0.001. Witli respect to the factors associated witli the occurrence of oral diseases in patients with GERD, the duration of the disease and the appearance of dental érosions, xerostomia and halitosis were correlated; p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.016 respectively Conclusion: The prevalence of oral diseases is high in the study population, probably reflecting the situation in the general population. This study showed that there is a significant difference in oral health between healthy patients and those with Gastro-Esophageal Reflux. Therefore, if you observe these predominant oral manifestations in patients with these symptoms or any one of these symptoms, gastro-esophageal reflux disease should be suspected.
